WKZO Radio Collection, 1940-1995.

WKZO 590, under the ownership of John Fetzer, began broadcasting in Kalamazoo in 1931. Until 1957 the radio, and eventually television station was located in the Burdick Hotel, at first on the seventh floor, later on the second. In 1958 they moved to West Maple Street between Crosstown Parkway and South Westnedge. In the 1990's, the radio station moved to a site on West Main.The earliest items in the collection are three booklets, one from 1940 and two from 1947. They are filled with a number of photographs of Fetzer and his employees including radio personalities of the station. There are also photographs of Columbia Broadcasting Personalities. There are several photographs of Dr. Willis Dunbar who was employed by the station at this time. Also in the collection are two cardboard fans on wood sticks that say, "I'm a WKZO Radio Fan Dial 590 Kalamazoo, Mich." The brochure "Disaster strikes" has images of Kalamazoo after the tornado of 1980. Also included is a calendar, which is an example of an annual photo competition the station held for several years.

Willis Frederick Dunbar (1902-1970) served as a faculty member and dean at Kalamazoo College, 1929-1942 and a faculty member and department chairperson at Western Michigan University, 1941-1970. Dunbar also served as the vice mayor of Kalamazoo, Michigan, 1951-1953, 1955-1957. He was program director and director of public affairs at WKZO a Kalamazoo, Michigan, radio station, 1943-1951.
